Notes from meeting, Friday 15, 11:30 am in Maxwell Anthropology Courtyard.
The budget for next year is turned in! We’ll have a hearing soon, and we’ll need a few people to show up and say how great GROW is. I’ll let you know when.
The garden already has an entho-botanical focus, with lots of local food sources.
Met Connie from the museum, who was excited to let us plant. Planned to expand the middle planter so we can plant more in it. Erik is working on a map, so we can draw up plans for approval. (thanks Erik) There’s enough rock around the garden to use to expand the middle planter.
We also met Mary Beth Hermans (277-1400), who is the public programs coordinator for the Museum. A lot of groups come through the courtyard for presentations. Mary wants us the get rid of the middle planter so there’s more room for activities.
We’ll make more plans for this space as we start talking to more people to figure out what is really needed.
For now, we’ll start planting!
Friday Feb. 22 at 11 am we plan to meet to plant in the garden. Erik will bring lettuce and trowels, Travis and Kitty will bring shovels. Please come! Bring plants or tools if you have any to spare.
We also went to check out the space on Girard behind the fire station. It’s in a parking lot for the dorms, but it has a lot of promise. It’s just dirt (no grass!!) and a few trees.
We’d have to put up a fence around a small area (say 15x20) to start off. We need more information about water availability, composting, number of cars going by, the RA involvement, etc. We’ll find out more about this space soon!
Here are some pictures of the fire station garden. The square building on the bottom is the station, then right above is a parking lot. The backwards C-shaped area is where are garden would be, at the top of the C.
We’re still planning a meeting Wed. Feb. 27 in the SUB to look at the planters on the balcony.
We’ll also plan a seedling party soon. We’ll meet at Erik’s house to get some seeds started so we can transfer them to the garden later. Maybe we’ll get a chance to watch The Future of Food, a great documentary about genetic engineering in plants.
See you on Friday to plant!
